The Astaire Awards
Donna Distefano was commissioned to design and create the prize for the Fred and Adele Astaire Awards, celebrating excellence in dance and choreography on Broadway and in film. Presenters included Liza Minnelli, Geoffrey Rush, and Bebe Neuwirth. The event was hosted by Alan Cumming and was a tribute by Ava Astaire to her father.
The awards, made of fine silver and blue sapphire, are pendant medallions featuring a photo-engraved portrait of the Astaire siblings. The frames also serve as objets d'art and can be displayed on a stand.
American film director and choreographer Stanley Donen (Singin’ in the Rain) was awarded the Douglass Watt Lifetime Achievement Award. Recipients of the other four awards were Peter Darling (Billy Elliot) for Best Broadway Choreographer, Longinus Fernandes (Slumdog Millionaire) for Best Film Choreographer, Pia Glenn (You're Welcome America...) for best Female Dancer, and David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik, and Kiril Kulish
(Billy Elliot) for Best Male Dancer.
